The Do's and Don'ts of Tennis Etiquette
Tennis comes with a few unwritten rules that all players should be aware of. Whether you’re playing singles or doubles, understanding the correct etiquette will make your game go smoother and help you get along better with your opponents. Let’s take a look at some of the basic “do’s and don’ts” when it comes to tennis etiquette.
Do Dress Appropriately
While there isn’t any official dress code, you should always wear sports attire for ease of movement. Shoes should have non-marking soles so they won’t leave scuff marks on the court surface. Be mindful if you have any accessories like caps or sunglasses, as they can be distracting and unsafe if they fall off during vigorous play.
Do Arrive On Time
This is one of the most basic pieces of advice when it comes to sports etiquette in general - not just in tennis. Punctuality shows respect for your opponent and the game itself, so make sure you show up on time. If something unexpected does come up, be sure to contact your opponent as soon as possible and let them know.
Do Be Prepared
Make sure you have all the necessary equipment like tennis balls and rackets. If a player needs something that you have, for example, a racket dampener, do lend them if possible. This small gesture goes a long way towards building trust between players.
Do Introduce Yourself To Your Opponents
It may seem like such a small thing, but introducing yourself to your opponents (and shaking their hands) is an important part of tennis etiquette. Not only does it show respect for the other person, but it also helps create a sense of sportsmanship on the court. You can even engage in some friendly conversation before or after the match - just don’t let it distract you from the game! At the end of every match, it’s customary to shake hands with your opponent as a sign of mutual respect.
Do Be Aware Of Your Surroundings
It’s important to be aware of where everyone is during your games so that no one gets hit by an errant ball or racket swing. If someone is standing too close to your line of sight while you're swinging or returning shots, wait until they move before striking the ball. You should also try to avoid making sudden movements when someone else is about to hit; doing so can disrupt their focus.
Don't Take Too Long Between Points
Tennis is a fast-paced game; therefore players should strive to move quickly between points so as not to disrupt their opponent’s rhythm or momentum. In general, long pauses between points should be avoided whenever possible and all players should try their best to stay focused on the task at hand - playing good tennis!
Do Call Out Close Shots Fairly
You should maintain good sportsmanship at all times. This means always doing your best to call out close shots fairly, even if you think they might have been out. Even when a shot is really close and difficult to judge, you should still make an effort to call it correctly in order to be fair. It may not always be easy - because who's going to know the actual truth? But honesty is always the right move in the game of tennis. Ultimately, calling shots correctly sets a good example on the court and will make you feel better about yourself in the long run.
Don't Make Unnecessary Noises During Play
One of the most annoying things that can happen during a game is when someone makes unnecessary noises while they are playing. This includes tapping their racket on the ground, making loud breathing sounds, and talking while serving. Not only is this distracting for both players, but it can also affect the quality of the game if one player isn’t able to concentrate due to these noises.
Do Keep The Court Clean
Keeping the court clean is essential for ensuring a safe and enjoyable playing experience. It's important to pick up any litter (e.g., cans or bottles) that may have been left behind by other players before starting your game. If there's any standing water on the court due to rain or condensation, take care of it right away by rolling the court so that it doesn't become a hazard during play. At the end of your session, make sure all balls are removed from the court.
Proper tennis etiquette is essential for all players to have an enjoyable experience on the court regardless of whether they win or lose. Following these do's and don'ts will help ensure that you have an enjoyable time while also showing respect for your opponents. Remember: no matter how competitive things get out there on the court always maintain your sportsmanship.
